Note: The described method is for arithmetic sequences only.
The equivalent method for Geometric sequences is as follows:
a: the first term.
r: the common ratio.
if U4 = 27
and U2 = 3
Calculating r:
U4 = U2 x r^2
27 = 3 x r^2
27/3 = r^2
r^2 = 9
r = (plus or minus!) 3
Calculating a:
a = U1
a x r = U2
either:
3a = 3
a = 1
or:
-3a = 3
a = -1
