Note: The described method is for arithmetic sequences only. The equivalent method for Geometric sequences is as follows:
a: the first term.
r: the common ratio.

if U4 = 27
and U2 = 3

Calculating r:
U4 = U2 x r^2
27 = 3 x r^2
27/3 = r^2
r^2 = 9
r = (plus or minus!) 3

Calculating a:
a = U1
a x r = U2

either:
3a = 3
a = 1

or:
-3a = 3
a = -1
